Therefore, I would have written: “Most American speakers and WRITERS would …, do occur in American speech and writing.” The adjectival form of “United States of America” is “American”. I do not get it about the use of “American” now and “U.S.” then, especially since “U.S.” = “United States” is a noun and not an adjective. “Most American speakers would …, do occur in U.S. I have been able to think of a few verbs that do not have a present participle at all, such as “can” (to be able) and “may”, so are these cases of nonexistence an irregularity? Can you? For example, the present participle of “to be” is “being” and the present participle of “to have” is “having”. I have been unable to think of ANY exceptions. I have been told that the present participles of ALL verbs in English are regular. It is the mathematician in me: if something is a little bit irregular, then it is irregular all the way. When a vowel disappears, then the word is out-and-out irregular, such as in these words. It might be only mildly irregular, but it is irregular nevertheless. In other words, if the past tense does not end in “ed”, then the verb is an irregular verb. For example:īend/bent, feel/felt, keep/kept, leave/left, lend/lent, lose/lost, mean/meant, send/sent, sleep/slept, spend/spent, weep/wept. I consider the verbs whose past tenses end in “t” to be IRREGULAR verbs. I have never used leant or learnt except maybe in Scrabble/WWF LOL. I personally use the words dreamt, burnt and knelt more often than their -ed forms. Not that there would be any confusion in context, of course.Īlthough I have not done any internet searches for hits, in my reading I have not seen spoilt as being common (at least not here in the US), whether applied to children or food. I would only suggest that some be reserved for one meaning only, such as smelt (for the fish) and spelt (for the grain). learned/learnt), and have seen both in my reading all my life. I am fine with all the alternative spellings listed (e.g. How funny that there is an ad on today’s post page for M-Modal, the company I work for LOL Most people seem to accept those spellings, even if their variants are becoming more popular. There are many things said on here about what British people say/think that I am surprised at, having never or rarely encountered them.īut in the case of spelt, smelt and leant I semi-agree with the article. Then again, I find that if I read the same word over and over and over it loses all meaning or semblance of correctness, no matter whether it has been spelt or spelled correctly. I think many British English speakers would consider words such as leant, spelt and smelt as out-and-out misspellings.

With Shang Tsung returning, I'm really just hoping that means more Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, who voiced Shang Tsung's DLC appearance in MK11 and also played the shapeshifting antagonist in the live-action Mortal Kombat. While NetherRealm Studios has been releasing a steady flow of DLC fighters and features like Krossplay, some new DLC with actual story content would be an interesting development for the franchise. It looks like we might get our first glimpse of what's to come tomorrow. Whoever remains, they proceed to rewrite history, potentially opening up new versions of the Mortal Kombat "kanon," similar to the way MK9 rebooted the franchise. Depending on your fight outcomes, one of a few characters can appear at the end-the trailer shows one of the possibilities, Raiden, while Kitana is also a possible end-of-the-world buddy for Liu Kang. There is some theorizing to do, but it is spoiler-heavy, so if you're looking to stay free of spoilers on Mortal Kombat 11's fantastic single-player story campaign, be wary that I'm discussing them below the trailer.Īt the conclusion of Mortal Kombat 11, Liu Kang has inherited godlike powers and stolen control over the flow of time from the game's antagonist Kronika. It seems likely this is additional Mortal Kombat 11 content, whether story DLC or a new Kombat Pack, rather than a new MK. More is set to be revealed tomorrow, May 6, but the closing text on the trailer refers to downloadable content. But as Liu Kang begins to spin up the timepiece of history, a fiery portal appears, with a voice demanding that Liu Kang stop before he "dooms us all." Raiden, in surprise, shouts, "Shang Tsung?" The new teaser shows Raiden and Liu Kang discussing forging a new history for the universe. A year after the latest entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise, NetherRealm Studios is teasing more to come about the fighting game tomorrow with a new teaser released today. Is there something you think we should be reporting on? Email appears we're not quite done with Mortal Kombat 11 just yet. |
